This plant is equally at home when featured in the perennial border or found in the meadow garden; it tolerates both sun and shade and is an overall great performer. Astrantia prefers moist but well drained soil and if these conditions are met, it will provide flowers from early June right through into September. The blooms are cup shaped and deep burgundy in color, delicately balancing on long, wiry stems. Astrantia Hadspens Blood makes an outstanding and long lasting Cut Flower. If the flowers are left standing, the seed heads will form attractive fawn-colored bracts that last well into winter. Although Astrantia’s tend to seed themselves throughout the garden, I have found them relatively non-invasive.
