Chandler holds the record for being the world's largest blueberry. It produces huge berries, each the size of a toonie, on productive and handsome plants. We find that these berries are great for fresh eating but prefer a smaller berry for baking as a cup of Chandler blueberries only contains about 12 berries! Don’t let that hold you back from planting a bush or two for fresh eating because they produce a tasty berry: sweet and flavourful, tempered with just the right amount of tartness. Berries are firm verging on hard with a nice chewy texture. Chandler produces berries over a long period, usually from Mid-July and well into August. Each bush can produce up to 15 pounds of fruit when mature. Chandler’s fall color is a brilliant orange, with bright red stems over winter.
Blueberries grow best in slightly acidic, moist but well-drained soils. We suggest mixing in some wood chips from softwood or hardwood trees (but not cedar) into the planting hole and use as a mulch. They thrive in full sun locations but can withstand partial shade. To ensure optimal harvest we recommend a light winter pruning, removing damaged or crossing branches and thinning out some of the older branches once the bush has gone dormant. Blueberries work well in containers and can easily be kept for several years in a rich bark based potting soil. There is no need to take them indoors, though they would appreciate being set out of the wind during Arctic outflow events.
