Bouteloua gracilis | Blonde Ambition

‘Blonde Ambition’ turns a hot, dry planting into something memorable. Above tidy blue-green foliage, it produces masses of unusual horizontal seedheads that look like tiny floating flags. They begin chartreuse, mature to blonde and remain effective well into fall, giving the plant a much longer decorative season than many flowering perennials.

This is an excellent choice for gravel gardens, boulevard-style plantings, prairie-inspired borders and other lean sites where richer garden plants need too much water or attention. It stays relatively narrow at the base, mixes easily with coneflowers, salvias and sedums, and looks especially striking when planted in drifts or backlit by low sun. As a North American native cultivar, it also fits naturally into wildlife-minded and naturalistic designs.

Growing notes: Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. Lean soil helps keep the stems sturdy; avoid heavy feeding and excessive irrigation. Water while establishing, then reduce supplemental water. Leave the seedheads standing through winter and cut back in early spring.
