Carex obnupta is a practical answer for the part of the garden that stays too wet for ordinary ornamental grasses. This British Columbia native sedge grows naturally in sloughs, wet meadows, shorelines and riparian areas, forming dense, upright clumps that can spread by rhizomes. Its fibrous growth helps cover soil, slow water and create habitat while maintaining a strong, clean grassy texture.
Use it in rain gardens, bioswales, pond edges, seasonally flooded areas or low spots where water collects. It is also valuable in naturalized plantings where a robust native ground layer is needed. Rather than forcing a drought-loving plant into a wet site, this sedge turns excess moisture into an advantage and supports a garden that feels connected to the local landscape.
Growing notes: Plant in sun or part shade in consistently moist to wet soil. It tolerates heavy and seasonally saturated ground and can form colonies where conditions suit it, so allow room or use barriers where spread must be controlled. Remove tired foliage in late winter or early spring if a tidier appearance is desired.
