Carex testacea | Orange New Zealand Sedge

If you need a small grass-like plant that keeps contributing after summer flowers fade, Carex testacea is an especially useful choice. Its fine, arching leaves begin olive green and develop warm copper, orange and bronze tones, with the richest colour arriving in the cooler months. The result is a soft fountain of foliage that brings movement and four-season interest without taking over a small space.

Use it to warm up gravel gardens, edge a path, soften the rim of a container or repeat through a mixed border. It is particularly effective beside dark evergreens, silver foliage and plants with purple leaves. Because the foliage is the main attraction, you are not waiting for a short bloom window to enjoy it.

Growing notes: Plant in sun to part shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Full sun generally produces the strongest copper colour. Avoid sites that remain waterlogged through winter. Comb or trim away tired foliage in spring as new growth begins.
