Hakonechloa macra | Stripe It Rich

‘Stripe It Rich’ solves one of the hardest garden problems: creating bright colour and movement in shade. Its cascading leaves are golden yellow with crisp white striping, forming a low, flowing mound that resembles a small waterfall. Unlike sun-loving ornamental grasses, it is happiest in woodland conditions and brings light to areas beneath trees, beside shaded paths and along north- or east-facing foundations.

Use it as a graceful groundcover, let it spill over the edge of a container, or repeat it along an entrance where its striped foliage can be appreciated up close. The soft form pairs naturally with hostas, ferns, heucheras and Japanese maples. It grows gradually into a wider clump, filling space without becoming coarse or overwhelming its companions.

Growing notes: Plant in part shade or shade in rich, well-drained soil that stays evenly moist. Protect it from hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the pale foliage, and avoid letting containers dry completely. The leaves die back in winter; remove old foliage in late winter before fresh shoots emerge.
