Commonly called the ‘Blood Plum,’ Satsuma stands out as one of the best Japanese plums on the market. California horticulturist Luther Burbank developed the variety after receiving a bag of seeds from Japan in 1883, and he introduced it to the public in 1889. The fruit is medium-large in size, with glossy purple skin and luscious crimson flesh. Satsuma is semi-clingstone. With a rich, full-bodied taste and a pleasant almond flavor, Satsuma is wonderful for fresh eating as well as preserving. The tree yields an abundant crop of fruit in late August through early September. Satsuma is partially self-pollinating, but we highly recommend planting with another Japanese plum to ensure a consistent, bountiful harvest. Satsuma has a strong disease resistance and is hardy in USDA zones 5 through 9.
