Miscanthus sinensis | Serengeti

‘Serengeti’ gives you several changes of colour from one compact plant. The leaves emerge with bold pale central bands, creating a bright variegated clump early in the season. As summer advances, red and purple tones develop through the foliage, while reddish stems rise above it carrying coppery flower panicles. Instead of peaking for only a few weeks, this grass keeps changing and adding interest well into fall.

Use it when a sunny border needs a strong vertical accent but a full-sized maiden grass would be too large. It works as a specimen, repeated rhythmically through a perennial planting, or as a seasonal screen in a generous container. The upright foliage also provides a clean backdrop for late-flowering perennials.

Growing notes: Plant in full sun for the strongest colour and in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly while it establishes; mature clumps tolerate some dryness. Leave the stems standing through winter for structure, then cut back close to the ground in late winter or early spring.
