Molinia caerulea | Variegata

‘Variegata’ is a useful way to brighten a border without relying on flowers. Its compact clump of green leaves is boldly striped with cream, creating a luminous effect from spring onward. In summer, fine purple-tinged flower stems rise above the foliage and later fade to warm gold, adding height and movement while remaining transparent enough to see the planting behind them.

Use it to lift a darker corner in part shade, break up a block of solid green foliage, or add a light vertical layer among hostas, ferns and flowering perennials. Because the plant stays comparatively small and clump forming, it works well in intimate borders and containers where larger ornamental grasses would feel heavy.

Growing notes: Plant in sun or part shade in fertile soil with steady moisture and good drainage. It performs especially well where summers are not excessively hot and dry. The foliage dies back for winter and may be slow to reappear in spring, so mark the clump and cut old growth to the ground before new leaves emerge.
