Panicum virgatum ‘Blood Brothers,’ commonly known as switchgrass, is a sport of the popular variety Heavy Metal. While Heavy Metal features steel blue colored foliage this variety boasts a rich maroon-red. As the summer heat commences the leaves turn burgundy, only intensifying as summer progresses. Blood Brothers grows to about 4 ft tall. It is clump-forming, long-lived and very tolerant of different soil conditions. Blossoms form in midsummer developing into small round seed heads beloved by birds throughout fall and winter. While some switchgrasses tend to flop as they mature, this variety has proven to be quite sturdy. Plant with Echinacea and Agastache for a striking combination. Hardy to zone 4.
