Pennisetum | Black Beauty Fountain Grass

When a border needs stronger contrast and a definite focal point, ‘Black Beauty’ fountain grass provides it without the upkeep of a flowering shrub. Its arching green foliage forms a substantial fountain-shaped clump, followed in late summer by thick, smoky-purple to nearly black bottlebrush plumes. The seedheads remain attractive as they mature, extending the display into fall and adding structure through winter.

This is a useful grass for anchoring a sunny perennial bed, softening a hard corner or creating an informal screen when planted in a group. The dark flowers make pale perennials and silver foliage look brighter, while the moving seedheads bring life to naturalistic and contemporary plantings. Once established, it is a practical choice for gardeners who want a dramatic effect with relatively little water or routine care.

Growing notes: Give it full sun and well-drained soil. Water regularly during establishment, then more deeply and less often. Leave the dried clump standing for winter interest and wildlife shelter, then cut it close to the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth starts.
