‘Hameln’ is a reliable answer when you want the movement and soft plumes of fountain grass without committing to a large plant. It forms a compact mound of arching deep-green foliage, then produces abundant silvery to pinkish-white flower spikes in late summer. The leaves shift to orange-bronze in fall and eventually beige, while the dried clump remains attractive well into winter.
Its rounded habit fits naturally into sunny perennial beds, foundation plantings, low informal hedges and large containers. Repeat it along a walkway to create rhythm, or use one clump to soften the edge of stone, concrete or a retaining wall. It combines especially well with sedums, asters, coneflowers and salvias, extending the border’s season after many summer flowers have finished.
Growing notes: Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil. Water regularly through the first season; established clumps tolerate moderate drought. Leave the seedheads standing over winter for texture and shelter, then cut the plant back close to the ground in late winter or early spring.
