Pennisetum orientale | Oriental Fountain Grass

Oriental fountain grass is a solution for sunny spaces that need softness, movement and a long season of flower without constant deadheading. A compact mound of arching grey-green leaves produces an abundance of narrow, fluffy grey-mauve plumes that resemble soft bottlebrushes. The flower stems lean and sway rather than standing rigidly, giving borders and containers an easy, relaxed character.

Its manageable size makes it useful near the front of a mixed border, along a warm pathway, in a gravel garden or as the airy centrepiece of a large pot. The plumes also work well in fresh or dried arrangements. Once established, the plant handles summer-dry conditions better than many flowering perennials, making it a good fit for lower-water designs.

Growing notes: Choose a warm, sunny, sheltered position with excellent drainage, especially through winter. Water during establishment, then allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Leave the seedheads for fall and winter texture and cut the clump back in spring. In colder or exposed locations, provide winter protection.
