Stachys officinalis ‘Hummelo’ is a stunning variety of wood Betony, featuring beautiful clumps of crisp clean foliage and intense pink flower spikes. It remains compact, reaching 2 ft tall and 2 ft wide at maturity. The flower stems emerge in late June, with spikes protruding far above the foliage. They provide interest year-round as the flower stems fade to warm brown holding their structure well into winter. I used this plant as an edging plant near the front of the meadow and it is stunning when combined with the soft, textured ornamental grasses. Stachys officinalis ‘Hummelo’ was bred by popular Dutch garden designer, Piet Oudolf and named after his nursery Hummelo.
